The water rises at exactly your target speed. Type faster than the target and the gap grows. Press Escape to pause.

How to play

  1. Choose the speed you are aiming for. The water will rise at exactly that pace.
  2. Press any key to start. Type the word on the platform directly above you.
  3. Finishing the word jumps you up to that platform and the next word becomes your target.
  4. Watch the clear water count. It is how many platforms of head start you have left.
  5. The climb ends when the water reaches your platform. Press Escape at any time to pause.

The water rises at your target speed

Most typing games pick a difficulty for you, so surviving longer tells you only that you did well at that game. This one works the other way round. The rising water is set from a words-per-minute figure you choose, worked out from the length of the words in play, so staying level with it means you are typing at that exact speed.

That turns a vague goal into something you can see. If your job advert asks for 45 words per minute, set the target to 45 and climb. Pulling away from the water means you are clearing the bar; watching it close means you are not there yet. At the end the game tells you the speed you actually held, measured the same way a typing test measures it.

Four sets of words

  • Classic uses everyday English, which is what a general typing test contains.
  • My weak keys fills the platforms with words loaded with the characters you keep missing, read from your own record on this site.
  • Job words uses dispatch, clerical, medical and accounts vocabulary, the kind employer tests are built from.
  • Numbers uses figures, reference codes and short addresses for data entry practice.

Tips for a longer climb

  • Build a gap early. The first platforms are the cheapest head start you will get.
  • Keep a steady rhythm rather than sprinting. The water is relentless, not fast.
  • Read the next word while you finish the current one, the same habit that raises test scores.
  • A mistake costs you the keystroke twice over, so accuracy beats speed here as well.
  • If you cannot hold your target, drop one level, hold it comfortably, then move back up.

Questions about the keyboard jump game

It is a climbing typing game. Each platform above you carries a word, and typing that word makes your character jump up to it. Water rises from below the whole time, so standing still is not an option. The run ends when the water reaches the platform you are standing on.

Then measure it properly

A climb tells you whether you can hold a speed under pressure. A timed test gives you the figure itself, measured over a set duration the way an employer test does. Use the game to build the habit, then take a test to see where you stand.
