You can practise on a phone or tablet, but a physical keyboard gives a far more accurate WPM measurement. On-screen keyboards add their own delay.

A medical typing test measures speed and accuracy on clinical language: drug names, anatomy, procedures, abbreviations and the structured notes that go into a patient record. It is used to hire medical secretaries, medical receptionists, health records clerks, medical scribes and transcriptionists, and it is meaningfully harder than a general typing test for one simple reason. The vocabulary is unfamiliar and the cost of a mistake is high.

The test above runs five minutes on demanding text, which is a fair proxy for the sustained accuracy the work requires.

Speed expectations in healthcare roles

  • Medical receptionist: 40 to 45 WPM is typical.
  • Medical secretary or administrator: 50 to 60 WPM, because correspondence volume is high.
  • Medical scribe: 60 WPM and upward, since you are documenting a consultation in real time.
  • Medical transcriptionist: 65 to 80 WPM, and the audio-to-text ratio matters as much as raw speed.

Accuracy requirements in healthcare are the strictest of any office role, commonly 98 per cent or higher. A transposed digit in a dosage or a misspelled drug name is a clinical safety issue, not a typo, so assessments weight errors heavily and some disqualify on a single critical mistake.

Why medical vocabulary slows you down

Fast typing depends on your hands recognising letter patterns. English prose is full of familiar sequences, so your fingers move in learned chunks. Clinical terms break that entirely: unusual consonant clusters, repeated vowels, Latin and Greek roots, and words your hands have simply never produced. Add hyphenated compounds, abbreviations with full stops, and dosages combining figures and units, and a typist who manages 65 WPM on ordinary text may find themselves at 40 on a discharge summary.

This is entirely normal and entirely trainable. The gap closes with exposure to the vocabulary, not with general speed work.

How to prepare

  • Type the terminology you will actually use. Take a list of common drugs, conditions and procedures for your specialty and type it daily. Twenty minutes of this is worth hours of general practice.
  • Master the numeric side. Dosages, dates of birth, NHS or patient numbers and vital signs are constant. Drill numbers until they need no thought.
  • Practise punctuation-heavy text. Clinical notes are full of full stops in abbreviations, slashes, hyphens and brackets. Our punctuation practice covers them.
  • Train accuracy above everything. Use accuracy practice and treat 98 per cent as your floor, not your goal.
  • Build stamina. Clinic letters are long. Practise with the 6-minute test rather than short bursts.

Medical transcription adds listening to the task, and the relevant measure becomes how many minutes of work it takes you to produce one minute of finished audio. Even experienced transcriptionists rarely work at a one-to-one ratio. A note on accuracy and patient safety

It is worth being blunt about why healthcare employers are strict. Records typed today are read by clinicians who were not in the room. A wrong dose, a wrong laterality, a wrong date, and a decision gets made on false information. Nobody expects a typing test to prove clinical judgement, but it does show whether you treat accuracy as the priority. Candidates who visibly slow down for a dosage rather than racing through it are demonstrating exactly the instinct the job needs.

Vocabulary differs by specialty

One of the most useful things you can do before a medical typing assessment is find out which department you would be working in, because the vocabulary load is not evenly distributed. Cardiology, orthopaedics, oncology and dermatology each have their own dense set of terms, and the drug names differ completely between them.

If you know the specialty, spend your practice time on its fifty most common terms rather than on general medical vocabulary. Fifty words sounds trivial, but in a specialty those fifty account for a large share of everything typed, and turning them from unfamiliar letter sequences into automatic hand movements is worth several words per minute on the real material.

Where you do not know the specialty, the safest general preparation is anatomy, the common abbreviation set, and the drug names that appear across all departments. Those transfer everywhere.

Electronic records and templates

Modern healthcare typing is rarely free text on a blank page. It happens inside an electronic health record, in structured fields, with templates, drop-downs and auto-complete for common terms. That changes the skill in two ways.

First, navigation matters as much as typing. Moving between fields with the keyboard rather than reaching for the mouse is worth more time over a day than a few extra words per minute. Second, auto-complete is a trap as well as a help: accepting the wrong suggested drug name is one of the most common documentation errors in clinical systems, and it happens precisely because it feels faster. The habit to build is glancing at what was inserted before moving on.

None of this reduces the value of raw speed. It does mean that in the job itself accuracy and system familiarity outrank speed, while the assessment that gets you the job mostly measures speed and accuracy on plain text. Prepare for the test you will sit, then expect the work to reward care more than pace.

Common questions

Do I need medical terminology knowledge to pass the typing test? For a medical receptionist or administrator role, usually not: the test is generally standard text and terminology is learned on the job. For scribe and transcription roles, terminology is part of the assessment and is worth studying in advance.

Is 45 WPM enough for a medical secretary role? It is at the lower end. Most medical secretary posts expect 50 to 60 because of the correspondence volume. Accuracy above 98 per cent will do more for your application than an extra five words per minute.

Will spelling of drug names be tested? Often indirectly, through a spelling or proofreading exercise rather than the typing test itself. Drug names are the most commonly misspelled words in clinical documents and employers know it.

Getting the most from this test

  • The timer starts on your first keystroke, so take a moment to settle your hands on the home row first.
  • Read one word ahead of the cursor. Most speed gains come from smoother reading, not faster fingers.
  • Do not chase a personal best on every attempt. One clean run at 95% accuracy teaches more than five rushed ones.
  • If a particular key keeps appearing in your mistake report, switch to weak-key practice rather than repeating the same passage.
  • Match the duration to the test you are preparing for. Stamina over five minutes is a different skill from a 30-second sprint.
