You can practise on a phone or tablet, but a physical keyboard gives a far more accurate WPM measurement. On-screen keyboards add their own delay.

A transcription typing test measures sustained speed and accuracy over a long stretch of text, because that is what transcription work is. There are no short bursts. There is an audio file, and the question is how long it takes you to turn it into an accurate document, and whether your accuracy is still intact at the end.

The test above runs six minutes, deliberately longer than a standard typing test, so you can see what happens to your accuracy when the novelty wears off.

The speed transcription actually requires

General transcription work becomes viable at around 60 words per minute and comfortable at 75. Specialist fields expect more: legal and medical transcription commonly ask for 70 to 80 words per minute, partly because of the vocabulary and partly because the volume is higher.

The reason the bar is higher than office roles is arithmetic rather than snobbery. Ordinary conversational speech runs at roughly 120 to 150 words per minute. If you type at 40, you are producing text at a third of the rate the audio arrives, so every minute of recording costs you several minutes of work. At 75 words per minute you are still behind the audio, but the gap is manageable with pauses and rewinds.

The ratio that decides what you earn

Transcriptionists measure work in the ratio of working time to audio time. A four-to-one ratio means four minutes of work per minute of recording. Beginners often sit between five and seven to one. Experienced transcriptionists working on clear, single-speaker audio may reach two or three to one. Since transcription is almost always paid per audio minute or per audio hour, that ratio is your effective hourly rate.

Typing speed is the single biggest lever on it, followed by how rarely you have to rewind, which is itself a function of not falling behind in the first place.

What makes transcription harder than copy typing

  • You cannot see the text. Every advantage of reading ahead disappears. You are typing from short-term memory, always a few words behind the speaker.
  • Real speech is messy. People overlap, trail off, use filler words, change direction mid-sentence and mispronounce names.
  • Audio quality varies. Background noise, distant microphones and accents all cost time.
  • Formatting rules apply. Speaker labels, timestamps, inaudible markers and house style conventions all have to be typed as you go.
  • It is genuinely tiring. Sustained concentration for an hour is the part most newcomers underestimate.

How to prepare

  • Practise from audio every day. Nothing else builds the specific skill. Start with clear, single-speaker material such as an audiobook or a scripted podcast, then move to unscripted interviews and finally recordings with several speakers.
  • Train endurance, not sprints. Use the 6-minute test and watch whether your last minute matches your first.
  • Get your accuracy high before your speed. Corrections are the hidden cost in transcription. Our accuracy practice is the right tool.
  • Drill punctuation. You are the one deciding where the commas and full stops go, so the marks have to be automatic. See punctuation practice.
  • Learn to leave a marker and move on. Stopping to solve one unclear word can cost a minute. Flag it and keep typing.

Practical setup

Two pieces of equipment change the job more than any amount of practice: decent closed-back headphones, so you hear consonants clearly, and a foot pedal, so you can rewind without taking your hands off the keyboard. Text expansion software for repeated phrases and speaker labels is the third. None of these replace typing speed, but together they can take a whole point off your ratio.

Is it worth learning?

Automatic speech recognition has changed transcription, but it has not removed the work. Machine output still needs a human to fix names, correct overlapping speech, apply formatting and take responsibility for accuracy, and in legal and medical settings that responsibility is the whole point. What has changed is that the work is increasingly editing rather than typing from scratch, which rewards accuracy and judgement even more heavily than before. Speed still sets the ceiling on what you can earn per hour.

The main kinds of transcription work

  • General transcription. Interviews, meetings, podcasts and lectures. The easiest to enter, the most competitive, and usually the lowest paid.
  • Legal transcription. Hearings, depositions and dictated correspondence. Requires legal vocabulary and strict formatting, and pays better.
  • Medical transcription. Clinical dictation. The highest vocabulary demand of the three and often requires training or certification. See our medical typing test page.
  • Captioning and subtitling. Adds timing and reading-speed constraints on top of transcription, and increasingly involves editing machine output.
  • Verbatim transcription. Every stutter, repetition and filler word included, used in research and legal contexts. Slower per audio minute than it looks.

Pay is nearly always quoted per audio minute or audio hour, never per hour worked, which is why your typing speed and your ratio matter so directly to what you earn.

Getting started realistically

Most transcription platforms run an entry test consisting of a short audio file you transcribe against their style guide. Failure is common on the first attempt, and it is usually not about typing speed at all: it is about not following the formatting rules, mishandling inaudible sections, or guessing at a word instead of marking it.

Read the style guide properly before you start, and follow it exactly even where you disagree with it. Reviewers are checking whether you can work to a specification, because that is what the client is paying for. Mark unclear audio with the required tag rather than guessing, since a guessed word that turns out wrong is a worse error than an honest marker.

Expect your first paid files to take much longer than you predicted. The ratio improves steadily over the first few months as your typing speed rises and, just as importantly, as you stop rewinding so often. Track how long each file takes you against its audio length: watching that number fall is the clearest evidence that the practice is working.

Getting the most from this test

  • The timer starts on your first keystroke, so take a moment to settle your hands on the home row first.
  • Read one word ahead of the cursor. Most speed gains come from smoother reading, not faster fingers.
  • Do not chase a personal best on every attempt. One clean run at 95% accuracy teaches more than five rushed ones.
  • If a particular key keeps appearing in your mistake report, switch to weak-key practice rather than repeating the same passage.
  • Match the duration to the test you are preparing for. Stamina over five minutes is a different skill from a 30-second sprint.
